On October 15th, KTJ Partners Michele Nierman and Dennis Walsh will speak at the Illinois Library Association Conference on the regulations and potential liabilities surrounding accessibility requirements for digital content.
Presentation Overview:
Federal regulations adopted in April 2024 require libraries and other state and local governments to comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), Version 2.1, on or before April 26, 2027 (with specific compliance dates dependent on the population of the community), to ensure government web content is accessible to people with disabilities. This presentation will discuss the benefits of digital accessibility, provide an overview of WCAG 2.1 (relevant statutory and regulatory mandates, enforcement procedures, and compliance deadlines), as well as how the WCAG 2.1 affects library responsibilities under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Niermann and Walsh will speak alongside Jennifer Norris, Assistant Director of Operations for Antioch Public Library District, and Jennifer Drinka, Executive Library Director for Antioch Public Library District, who will share their experiences with voluntary complaint resolution and implementing the WCAG 2.1 standards.
