Overview
Don Renner focuses his practice on a wide array of tax, estate planning and corporate issues for individuals, corporate clients and in support of KTJ’s local government practice.
Don heads the KTJ Wealth & Succession Planning Department. In that capacity, he serves individual and fiduciary clients in regard to their income tax, gift tax, estate tax, generation skipping transfer tax, estate planning, probate estate and trust administration, will contests and estate and trust litigation, fiduciary taxation and tax planning needs.
Don also represents for-profit corporations with regard to formation, mergers and acquisitions, general transactions and business succession planning. He represents not-for-profit corporations with regard to formation, tax-exemption, registration and general transactions. Don represents KTJ’s local government clients with regard to taxation and finance issues, including, but not limited to, PTAB appeals, tax rate objections, tax-exemption issues, budgeting, the levy process and Tax Cap concerns.
Don lives with his wife and three daughters in Downers Grove, Illinois.
Don graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington with a B.A. in History, Psychology and Spanish in 2000. He received his J.D., cum laude, from DePaul College of Law and a M.B.A., with distinction, and a concentration in Accounting from DePaul Kellstadt Graduate School of Business.
During his time at DePaul, Don served as an extern to the Honorable William J. Bauer of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He also served as Notes and Comments Editor as well as Executive Editor for the DePaul Journal of Sports Law and Contemporary Problems, a law review publication in which he was a founding member. Don is admitted to practice in Illinois and Michigan.

- Don is a member of the American, Illinois, Chicago and DuPage County Bar Associations, as well as the Illinois Local Government Lawyers Association.
Community Involvement
- Don is active in the Downers Grove community. He is a member of the Village of Downers Grove Architectural Design Review Board, a member of the District 99 Education Foundation and is active as a park district youth sports coach. He is a former member of the Board of Education for Community High School District Number 99 (2015—19).
Awards and Recognition
- Don has been named an Illinois Super Lawyer since 2017, based on nomination, evaluation of professional achievements and selection by a panel of attorneys in the applicable practice area. Only 5% of the total attorneys in each state receive the Super Lawyers designation.
- Don has also been named a Leading Lawyer by Law Bulletin Media since 2015, a peer-recommended distinction awarded to fewer than 5% of attorneys in Illinois.
